Myth: publish first on a topic and you'll own it
The first-mover belief says being earliest to cover a query locks in the position. Original-publish date is a weak and easily-overtaken signal.
Google has discussed original-reporting signals for news, but for evergreen topics there's no durable "I was here first" credit. Pages get overtaken constantly by later, better-linked, more complete competitors. The genuine advantage of publishing early is compounding time to accumulate links and entity associations — not an inherent priority flag.
For AI-search citation, recency can even cut against you: models may prefer the source that's currently most cited and comprehensive, regardless of who posted first.
— Treat early publishing as a head start to earn authority, not as authority itself
— Expect to defend a topic with updates and links; first-place is rented, not owned
Caveat: in true breaking-news and original-research contexts, primacy does carry real, documented weight — so the myth is domain-specific, not universally false.
Confidence: medium
