Pagination and hreflang: page 2 does not need to know about French

Pagination and hreflang: page 2 does not need to know about French

International sites with category listings often put hreflang on every paginated page. Page 1 of /en/shoes/ points to page 1 of /de/schuhe/, page 2 to page 2, and so on. This seems thorough, and it is where clusters fall apart.

The problem: paginated series rarely have the same length across locales. The German catalog has four pages, the English has seven. Pages 5 through 7 in English point to German pages that return 404. Google sees broken alternates and starts distrusting the whole series.

Cleaner approach:

— Put hreflang on page 1 of each series only
— Let paginated pages carry a self-canonical and their next and previous links, nothing more
— Make sure page 1 is the URL without a page parameter, so the cluster anchor is stable

If your listing pages are meaningful landing pages in their own right, with unique copy per locale, page 1 is where that value lives anyway. Deeper pages exist for crawl paths, not for ranking in any specific market.
