Myth: Gzip is good enough, skip Brotli
Same asset: gzip 142KB -> brotli 118KB. ~17% smaller, free.
Gzip and Brotli both compress, but Brotli uses a larger window and a built-in dictionary tuned for web text.
— On text assets (HTML/CSS/JS) Brotli -11 averages 15-25% smaller than gzip -9 at comparable CPU for static, pre-compressed files.
— On a 600KB JS payload that's ~100KB off the wire = ~520ms saved on a p75 1.6Mbps link.
Serve brotli to capable clients, gzip as fallback.
Takeaway: brotli cut 24KB (17%) per asset over gzip, zero quality loss.
