Myth: index all your facets to capture long-tail searches

Myth: index all your facets to capture long-tail searches

'Q: Won't indexing color and brand filters help me rank for "red Nike running shoes" long-tail terms?'

Short answer: Only for a tiny, curated subset — indexing everything creates index bloat that drags the whole catalog down.

The longer version: it's true that some facet combinations match real search demand ("red nike running shoes"). But "index all facets" turns a 2,000-product catalog into 200,000 thin, overlapping URLs. Crawl budget gets spread thin, near-duplicate pages cannibalize each other, and Google's quality systems start discounting the section.

The right move is selective indexing: identify the 20-50 single-attribute combinations with real search volume (usually one facet, like brand or category, sometimes two), give those clean static URLs, and noindex or block the combinatorial long tail (color + size + price + brand stacked together). One valuable facet indexed, the messy multi-facet stack closed off.

Rule of thumb: index facets that match keywords people actually search, block the combinatorial explosion.
