Anchor Due Diligence Before Buying a Domain
Acquiring an existing site means inheriting its anchor history, including liabilities invisible at the surface. A pre-purchase audit protects against buying a suppressed asset. The checklist:
— Reconstruct the full anchor distribution, not just current rankings. A site ranking today can carry a latent over-optimized profile that a future algorithm pass devalues.
— Inspect historical anchor velocity if archival data exists. A past exact-match burst, even if currently dormant, signals prior manipulation that may have left the domain in a fragile state.
— Cross-check whether rankings are supported by branded search demand or sit entirely on keyword anchors. The former is durable; the latter is the profile most exposed to devaluation.
The principle: you are valuing not the current traffic but the probability that the traffic survives the next reassessment. An over-optimized profile is a discount factor on that probability.
On one hand, a strong current ranking is real revenue. On the other, link-spam evaluation is continuous post-Penguin-4.0, so a profile that survived yesterday is not guaranteed tomorrow — current state is a weak predictor of durability.
Limitation: historical anchor data is patchy; archives miss links that appeared and vanished.
Open question: how should one discount a purchase price for an over-optimized profile when the timing of any devaluation is unknowable?
