Performance marketing captures demand that already exists and reports its results quickly and cleanly. Brand builds the demand that performance will later harvest, but it reports back slowly and stubbornly resists clean attribution.
Cutting brand to fund performance often looks clever for a single quarter and turns expensive a year later, once the cheap, easy-to-capture demand quietly runs dry and acquisition costs climb.
Neither number is the whole truth on its own. One is a sharp snapshot of this week, the other a slow accumulation you only notice when it is missing, and comparing them head to head misleads both ways.
Takeaway: judge brand and performance each on its own timeline, not against each other inside the same weekly report.
