FAQ: How many channels should a new community have?
Beginners open 12 channels on day one, then watch every one go silent. Empty rooms signal a dead community. Start with three, add only when one overflows.
Launch SOP (SOP = standard operating procedure, your repeatable playbook):
☐ #start-here — rules, intro template, one pinned message
☐ #general — the single conversation room
☐ #wins-and-asks — share results, request help
The trigger to add a channel: one topic generates 20+ messages a day inside #general for a week straight. Then split it out. Never add a channel because you imagine demand.
☐ Audit monthly: any channel under 5 messages a week gets archived
☐ Keep total channels under member-count / 50
Fewer rooms means denser conversation, which reads as alive.
