Myth: high reaction counts mean high engagement

Myth: high reaction counts mean high engagement

Reactions are the easiest engagement number to celebrate. Treated as a health signal, they mislead.

What the data shows
Reactions and conversation are weakly coupled. A post can draw hundreds of emoji and zero replies — pure passive acknowledgment that costs nothing and builds no ties. When researchers separate "low-cost" signals (reactions, single-emoji posts) from "high-cost" ones (substantive replies, threads), only the high-cost signals track retention and community formation. A channel optimizing for reactions is optimizing for the cheapest possible behavior.

Why it happens
A reaction is a one-tap exit from engagement, not an entry into it. It lets people feel present while staying passive — satisfying the urge to respond without the cost of actually contributing.

The caveat
Reactions aren't noise: they're a useful low-friction on-ramp and a real signal of what content lands. The error is weighting them as if they equaled replies. They measure approval, not participation.

Open question: if you ranked content by reply-to-reaction ratio instead of raw reactions, would you surface fundamentally different posts — and would chasing that ratio change what people make?
