Picking Your One Activation Metric
Vanity metrics (member count, message volume) hide whether your community actually works. You need one activation metric — the single action that predicts a member stays.
The decision tree to find it:
☐ List 5 actions members take in week one
☐ For each, compare 90-day retention of members who did it vs. didn't
☐ Pick the action with the biggest retention gap, not the most common one
☐ Confirm it's something you can influence with onboarding
☐ Set the target: percent of new members who do it within 7 days
For most communities it's "posted once" or "received one reply" — being seen, not seeing. Lurking does not activate anyone.
Now every onboarding decision answers one question: does this move people toward the activation action?
Save this for your next launch.
