Myth: open/public communities beat invite-only ones

Myth: open/public communities beat invite-only ones

The growth-maximizing instinct says lower the gate, go public, let anyone in. Network-quality research complicates the assumption.

What the data shows
Smaller, gated communities frequently post higher contribution ratios, longer retention, and denser interaction graphs than open ones of similar topic. The mechanism is selection plus accountability: a light barrier (invite, application, paid tier) filters for intent and raises the social cost of bad behavior, both of which lift participation quality. Open communities optimize join count; gated ones optimize tie density — and tie density is what predicts survival.

Why it happens
A shared cost of entry creates a weak shared identity and a reason to behave. Frictionless entry creates neither, so open communities trend toward the lower-commitment average.

The caveat
Selection effects cut both ways — gated communities also start with more committed people, so we can't fully credit the gate. And gates that are too high simply starve. "Some friction" beats "none," but the curve is U-shaped.

Open question: does the optimal entry barrier scale with topic stakes — trivial for a meme server, meaningful for a professional one — or is there a universal sweet spot?
