Controversy hooks brought the wrong crowd
"Be controversial, it drives engagement." My hook went hard: "Niche-down advice is a scam and everyone telling you to do it is lying." Engagement exploded. 3s retention 87%, 400 comments. I felt brilliant.
Then I looked closer. Average view duration was 12s on a 35s video. People came to fight in the comments, not to watch. Watch time told the real story, and it was bad. The algorithm pushed it to the wrong audience and stalled.
I softened it to a specific controversy: "Niching down too early cost me 8 months, here's the number that proves when to do it."
Comments dropped to 90. But average view duration hit 27s. Views went from a stalled 40k to 130k.
The lesson: rage gets comments, curiosity gets watch time. Be specific-controversial, not loud-controversial.
