The cleaner who paid for ads to lift his map ranking
Meet a commercial cleaner in Glasgow. A sales rep had implied that running Google Ads would 'warm up' his profile and lift his organic map pack position. So he poured budget into ads, expecting his free local ranking to rise alongside.
Three months and a few thousand pounds later, his map pack position was exactly where it started.
The premise was simply false. Paid spend does not influence organic local rankings — Google keeps those systems separate, and always has. He'd bought clicks, not authority. The moment the budget paused, his visibility paused with it.
We didn't kill the ads — they had their place. But we redirected half the budget into the things that actually move organic local rank: a review-generation routine, fixing his citations, building two real service pages.
The ads kept delivering paid leads. Meanwhile his organic map position climbed from eighth to third over eleven weeks, and those free leads — 27 a month by the end — kept coming whether or not he was spending.
The lesson: ad budget rents you visibility, it never buys organic rank — the two systems don't touch, so fund the work that compounds for free.
