The dealer whose pack listing advertised the wrong thing
Meet a used-car dealer who specialized in family SUVs. But in the pack, under his name, Google kept showing the little justification line 'Their website mentions sports cars' — pulling searchers expecting something he barely sold.
Those grey snippets under a pack result — 'Provides X,' 'Their website mentions Y' — are justifications, auto-generated from your site and reviews. Almost nobody realizes they can be steered. His was actively mis-selling him.
The phrase came from a thin, old 'sports cars' page that outranked his SUV content for relevance in Google's eyes. The algorithm grabbed the loudest matching text, and it was the wrong text.
We rebalanced the site: expanded and strengthened the family-SUV pages, pruned the stale sports-car page down, and made sure his reviews and posts kept saying 'family SUV.' Justifications follow the strongest on-site and review signals.
Two weeks, no change in the snippet.
Then it flipped to 'Provides family SUVs' — exactly the buyer he wanted.
Click-through on the listing rose noticeably; qualified lot visits up 31% with fewer mismatched tire-kickers.
The lesson: the justification line under your pack result is sales copy you can influence — feed Google the right strongest signal, or it'll advertise the wrong thing for you.
