The technical elements — keyword placement, headline optimization, search appearance — matter. But they determine whether someone finds you. What happens in the first 8 seconds they spend on your profile determines whether they connect, follow, or leave.
The most common profile mistakes from a first-impression perspective:
- Headlines that list titles instead of communicating value
- About sections that read like a third-person biography nobody asked for
- Featured sections left empty or filled with generic company content
- No evidence of actual thinking or perspective in the Activity section
Your profile is being read by people who could hire you, partner with you, or buy from you. The question each section should answer: what does this tell them about whether it's worth their time to reach out?
Most profiles don't answer that question clearly.
