If Search Console clicks are still flat, don’t wait for traffic to fall. Ranking losses often show up first in query data, not in sessions. Watch for: • average position slipping while impressions stay steady • a page losing clicks on its main query but holding secondary queries • one URL being replaced by a different URL for the same intent.
The cleanest warning is a slow spread of small declines. One query down by 2–3 spots is easy to miss; ten queries doing the same usually means the page is weakening. Compare the same page across devices and countries, because drops often start in one segment before they hit the rest.
Page reports help you catch cannibalization: if two URLs trade places for the same query, Google is unsure which page should rank. Also check whether branded queries stay strong while non-branded queries fade. That pattern often points to relevance loss, not site-wide technical trouble.
Set a routine: review top queries for pages with high impressions, then sort by position change and click loss. If impressions are flat but clicks slide, the page is losing visibility. Fix the page early, while the problem is still a ranking issue — not a traffic one.
