Myth: structured data (schema markup) boosts your rankings
Add FAQ schema, get a ranking bump — a widespread belief Google has directly contradicted.
Structured data helps search engines understand a page and can earn rich results (stars, FAQ accordions), but Google has stated it is not itself a ranking factor. The traffic gains people attribute to schema usually come from improved SERP appearance and CTR, or from the disambiguation that helps a page be retrieved for the right query — not a direct rank lift.
The distinction matters because the rich-result landscape shifts: Google removed most FAQ and HowTo rich results in 2023, erasing the CTR benefit overnight for sites that thought schema itself was the lever.
— Use schema for entity clarity and whatever rich results currently exist, not as a ranking tactic
— Don't over-invest in markup types whose rich results Google can revoke
Nuance: for AI search and Knowledge Graph entity-building, clean schema (Organization, Person, sameAs) carries real and durable value — separate from classic rankings.
Confidence: high
