Myth: outdo the top result on length and you'll outrank it (skyscraper technique)
The skyscraper method — find the top page, make something bigger, win — quietly assumes the incumbent ranks because it's the most comprehensive. Often it ranks because of links, age, and entity authority you can't out-length.
Reverse-engineering top SERPs shows length is rarely the deciding variable among the top three. Adding 2,000 words to beat a page backed by 400 referring domains and a strong brand entity loses to the wrong factor. The technique's documented wins usually came bundled with aggressive outreach for links — the links did the work.
— Diagnose why the incumbent ranks (links? brand? freshness?) before deciding bigger is the answer
— "Information gain" — adding what no competitor covers — beats "more of the same, longer"
Caveat: skyscraper still works where the SERP is genuinely thin and comprehensiveness is the gap. It fails when comprehensiveness was never the gap.
Confidence: medium
