Why a "child theme" protects your hard work
Here's a trap beginners fall into. You edit your theme's design directly, then the theme gets an update, and poof, your changes vanish.
A child theme fixes this. It's a thin layer that sits on top of your main theme (a theme is the design and layout of your site). Your edits go in the child layer, so updates to the main theme can't erase them.
Think of it like a clear sticker over a poster. You draw on the sticker, not the poster. Peel and replace the poster anytime, your drawing stays.
How: many themes offer a "child theme" download, or a free plugin like Child Theme Configurator builds one in two clicks.
In plain words: a child theme is a protective layer where your design edits survive theme updates.
