Shorts thumbnails: which tool, and does it even matter
Blunt truth first: thumbnails barely show in the Shorts feed. They matter on your channel grid and in search.
Tested for grid consistency:
Canva wins:
— Brand kit locks fonts/colors across 50 thumbnails
— Magic Resize from 9:16 to grid square
Photopea wins:
— Real layer control, free, no account
— Better for cutout-heavy faces
Canva's free tier blocks background remover after a few uses; that's the paywall that pushes you to $13/mo Pro.
Verdict: Canva if you run a branded channel and value consistency, Photopea if you're one person who wants control for free. Skip paying for a dedicated thumbnail app — neither moves Shorts views.
Not for: anyone expecting thumbnails to rescue a weak hook. They won't.
