Web hosting control panels have a reputation problem. cPanel is the default, but it's not the best option for every use case — and its pricing model has changed significantly since 2019.
cPanel's price increase (from $15 to $45+/month for resellers after the 2019 acquisition) pushed many hosting companies to alternatives. Understanding the landscape matters if you're evaluating hosts or managing your own.
Alternatives worth knowing:
— Plesk: commercial, comparable features to cPanel, better Docker/container support
— CyberPanel: free, built for OpenLiteSpeed, excellent performance for WordPress
— HestiaCP: free, lightweight, suitable for VPS operators running multiple sites
— ServerPilot: managed control panel as a service, handles LAMP/LEMP stack configuration
— No panel: if you're comfortable with CLI, direct Nginx + PHP-FPM configuration is faster, more efficient, and has zero overhead
For affiliate site operators running 5+ sites on a VPS: HestiaCP or a manual setup beats paying $45/month for cPanel. The features cPanel provides that you actually use — file manager, email, SSL management — can all be replaced with free alternatives.
For non-technical operators: managed hosting (Kinsta, Rocket.net) includes all the tooling without the overhead.
