"Just get a VPS" is bad default advice

"Just get a VPS" is bad default advice

They told you: "Skip shared, get a VPS — full control, better performance."

Unmanaged VPS means you are now the sysadmin: patching, firewall, fail2ban, backups, the 3am reboot when it OOMs. Most buyers don't want that job and run an insecure, mismanaged box that's slower than the shared plan they fled.

And "VPS" can still be oversold — vCPUs shared, RAM ballooned, neighbors noisy.

Who repeats this advice? People selling VPS, and affiliates whose VPS payout dwarfs shared.

Reality: control you can't operate is just liability with root access.
