"Join the biggest affiliate network for the best rates" — size isn't the rate
Creators conflate network scale with payout quality. The two are largely unrelated.
Context. Commission rates are set by individual merchants, not by the network. A large network is an aggregator, not a rate-setter.
Findings. Rate comparisons across networks for identical merchants show the same brand often offered at different commissions on different networks, with smaller niche networks and direct programs frequently paying more for the same conversion. Large networks add value through reporting and reliability, not superior base rates. Payout terms (cookie length, reversal policy, net-payment delay) vary more by program than by network.
Caveats. Direct programs that pay better often have weaker tracking and slower payment, a real risk that aggregators mitigate. Self-reported rate data is fragmentary and quickly stale as programs renegotiate.
Implication. Choose the program and terms, not the network's logo. The same merchant's economics can differ materially across where you source the link.
What we still don't know: no comprehensive, current cross-network rate database exists publicly, so comparisons are anecdotal and time-decaying.
