In Search Console, a real drop usually starts before clicks move. Watch for these early signals:
• Average position falls on your top queries while impressions stay steady.
• One page loses impressions across many queries, not just one keyword.
• CTR softens even when position looks unchanged.
• Branded queries hold, but non-branded terms start drifting down.
Check the query report first, then the page report. If several pages tied to the same topic cluster show the same pattern, it is rarely a single-page problem. That points to intent shift, stronger competitors, weaker internal linking, or content that no longer matches the search result set.
Don’t wait for traffic to make the case. Compare the last 7–14 days against the prior period, then group by query type: brand, money terms, and informational terms. A broad position slide across one group is more useful than one noisy keyword.
When the pattern is clear, act on the page layer first: refresh headings, tighten intent match, add missing subtopics, and make sure the URL is linked from relevant pages. If impressions recover before clicks, you caught it early.
