Myth: heavy verification gates protect your community
Captcha walls, reaction-roles, multi-step onboarding — sold as raid protection. The funnel data shows they're a double-edged blade.
What the data shows
Onboarding-funnel measurements consistently find that each added verification step sheds a meaningful slice of genuine joiners — drop-offs of tens of percent across multi-step gates are common. Bots and determined raiders, meanwhile, increasingly automate past simple captchas. So the gate can filter out more real humans than bad actors, especially the casual newcomers who'd have become your lurker base.
Why it happens
Friction is indiscriminate. It costs a human seconds of patience they may not spend, while costing a scripted attacker nothing. You're taxing the wrong population.
The caveat
Verification isn't worthless — during an active raid, even crude gates buy time, and phone/age gates serve real safety needs. The error is leaving heavy permanent friction up as a default when no threat is present.
Open question: would dynamic gating — friction that ramps up only when join-rate anomalies spike — preserve the lurker funnel while still blunting raids, and does anyone have the tooling to do it well?
