Is This a Real Reporter? A 5-Point Check
Most requests are genuine, but a quick check protects your time and your name. Run this before replying.
1. Outlet named? A real request says the publication, not "a major site."
2. Byline searchable? Type the reporter's name plus the outlet into a search box; you should find their past articles.
3. Email domain matches? A staff writer usually emails from the outlet's domain, not a free mailbox.
4. Reasonable ask? Honest reporters want a quote, not your money or your password.
5. Deadline that makes sense? Real ones give hours or a day, not "reply in 5 minutes or lose it."
Think of it like checking a parcel before you open it: a glance at the label tells you a lot.
Try this today: search one reporter's name and read an article they wrote. Now you know exactly who you are pitching.
