The client — a job board — kept asking us to commission surveys. They had something far better gathering dust: every search query their 3 million users typed, a real-time map of what the workforce was anxious about. They were terrified to touch it.

The fear was legitimate and solvable. We worked with their legal team to aggregate and anonymise the data so no individual was identifiable, then pulled one finding: searches for "jobs with no degree" had quietly doubled in a year.

First-party data — information a company already owns from its own operations — beats any commissioned survey, because nobody else on earth has it. That exclusivity is the hook.

The pitch leaned on it: "This isn't a poll. It's what three million real job seekers actually searched, and the shift is striking." A workplace editor jumped: "Real behaviour beats stated opinion every time. This is what people do, not what they say."

The uniqueness made it un-ignorable. The piece named the job board as the sole source, and the degree-free finding got pulled into 18 follow-ups.

Result: 18 links from data the client already owned and almost never let us touch.

<b>Lesson:</b> Your client's own first-party data is the strongest asset they have and the one they fear most. Solve the privacy problem with their lawyers, and you've got a story no competitor can copy.
