SOP #49 — "Backlink count proves authority" is wrong
Myth: thousands of referring domains = strong site. Correction: link quality and pattern decide value; a big number often hides a toxic or paid profile you'll inherit. Inspect the profile, not the total:
1. Pull referring domains by date — a flat history with one 1,000-link spike = bought links, flag it.
2. Check anchor-text distribution — over-optimized exact-match anchors ("best casino bonus") signal manipulation risk.
3. Sample 30 linking domains by hand: real sites or PBN/expired-domain junk?
4. Identify links the seller is paying to keep — those die after handover; subtract their value.
5. Confirm the disavow file (if any) — an existing disavow means prior link trouble.
A small clean profile outranks a huge dirty one. Inherit links you'd build yourself.
Save this — run it every deal.
