Linking to .gov Does Not Buy Authority

Linking to .gov Does Not Buy Authority
The question: does linking out to .gov and .edu sources raise your E-E-A-T? The tactic assumes authority flows inward from prestigious domains you cite. There is no documented mechanism for this.

E-E-A-T concerns the trustworthiness of your page's main content. The QRG asks raters whether claims are accurate and well-supported — not whether sources carry a particular top-level domain. A correct citation to a .com primary source outranks a decorative link to a .gov homepage that doesn't support the specific claim.

The confusion has two roots:
— PageRank intuition run backwards. Inbound links from authoritative sites can help; outbound links do not pass authority to you.
— Citation as theater. Linking to NIH beside an unsupported sentence borrows the appearance of rigor without the substance.

Counter-evidence: pages that cite primary research do tend to rank better for medical queries. Caveat: that likely reflects genuine accuracy and effort — the citations are evidence of careful work, not a TLD bonus. Strip the accuracy and keep the .gov links and the benefit should vanish; the correlation is doing the talking.

Practical reading: cite the source that actually substantiates the claim, at the granularity of the claim. A precise link to a study's relevant finding helps a reader and a rater verify you. The domain extension is incidental.

What we still don't know: whether outbound link quality is used as any weak corroboration signal — Google has neither confirmed nor ruled it out, and the public record is silence.
