Playbook: Designing a Deal-Registration Process That Reduces Channel Conflict

Playbook: Designing a Deal-Registration Process That Reduces Channel Conflict

Deal registration exists to stop two partners (or a partner and your direct team) from racing to claim the same account. Poorly designed, it becomes a land-grab. A process spec:

1. Define the registrable unit precisely. Account + product line + named opportunity, not just account — otherwise the first partner locks an entire logo.

2. Set an expiry. Registrations should decay (commonly 60-90 days) unless advanced to a real stage. Stale locks are the top source of partner resentment.

3. Establish a deterministic tiebreak, usually first-to-register-with-evidence, and publish it. Discretionary tiebreaks erode trust faster than any single lost deal.

4. Require qualifying evidence, not just a name — a contact, a meeting, or a documented opportunity. This filters speculative claims.

5. Instrument approval latency. If registrations sit in a queue for days, partners stop registering and you lose the visibility the program exists to create.

Trade-off: strict registration protects partners and reduces conflict, but adds friction that slows fast-moving deals; loose registration is frictionless but invites disputes.

Watch the incentive: partners over-register defensively when approval is slow or opaque, which then floods the queue — a self-reinforcing failure mode.

Open questions: how to handle direct-sales overlap fairly, and whether to allow partner-to-partner deal sharing on complex multi-product opportunities.
