Attribution modeling vs. incrementality testing for partner value
The deepest tool comparison in partner measurement is also the least discussed: attribution assigns credit for conversions that happened, while incrementality testing asks whether the partner caused conversions that wouldn't have otherwise. These answer different questions, and confusing them overstates partner value systematically.
Attribution models distribute observed conversions across touches.
— Always sum to 100% of conversions; every model finds someone to credit.
— The structural flaw: attribution cannot distinguish influence from coincidence. A coupon partner credited at last-touch may simply be intercepting buyers who'd have converted anyway — capturing margin, not creating sales. Attribution will dutifully credit them regardless.
Incrementality testing measures causal lift.
— Holdout groups, geo-tests, or matched-cohort comparison estimate conversions the partner actually added.
— The gold standard for the causal question — does this partner grow the pie or just claim a slice?
— Weakness: expensive, slow, and hard in low-volume B2B where you lack the sample size for clean holdouts; long cycles mean a test takes quarters to read.
The consequential insight: a partner can have high attributed revenue and near-zero incrementality — most visible with bottom-funnel partners (coupon, brand-bidding, retargeting affiliates) who harvest existing demand. Attribution rewards them; incrementality would expose them.
Trade-off: Attribution is continuous, cheap, and complete but causally blind. Incrementality is causally honest but expensive, slow, and sample-hungry — often impractical at B2B volumes.
Implications: Use attribution for routine payout and partner management; reserve incrementality tests for your largest spend lines, where the difference between 'credited' and 'caused' is worth quarters of measurement. The partners attribution loves most are exactly the ones incrementality should audit.
