"Real experts don't feel like impostors, right?"
Q: "I feel like a fraud posting advice. I figure real experts are confident — so the impostor feeling means I shouldn't be doing this. True?"
Short answer: False, and it's backwards. Impostor syndrome (feeling like a fraud despite being capable) shows up most in people who actually know enough to see the gaps. True beginners often feel oversure. The discomfort is a sign of competence, not a disqualification.
The myth says the feeling is data about your ability. It isn't — it's data about your standards. Confident-looking experts feel it too; they've just stopped treating it as a stop sign.
You don't need to feel like an authority to be useful. You need to be one step ahead and honest about it.
Try this today: Next time the fraud feeling hits, post anyway and add "here's what I'm still figuring out." Naming it disarms it.
