Traffic potential beats raw volume on 1 in 3 keyword picks
Raw search volume ignores that one page ranks for many terms. Traffic potential (estimated visits from ranking #1, summing all terms that page would capture) tells the fuller story. We compared rankings of 700 targets by each metric.
— Low-volume head term, high traffic potential (rich long-tail tail behind it): ▇▇▇▇▇ 33% of picks reshuffled
— High-volume term with no tail and brutal SERP: ▇▇ dropped down the list
— Traffic potential needs SERP data per target; volume is cheaper
— Volume still wins for ad/PPC sizing where each term is bid separately
So what: rank organic content targets by traffic potential, not volume. A 200-volume head term sitting on a 2,000-visit tail beats a 1,000-volume dead end.
Benchmark of the week: the top-ranking page for a head term captures, on average, traffic from 9 related queries you never explicitly targeted.
