The HVAC company that ranked worse after adding nine categories
Meet an HVAC contractor in Tampa. He'd read that stuffing your Google profile with every available category casts a wider net. So he piled on ten: heating, cooling, furnace repair, ductwork, thermostat, 'air conditioning store,' even 'general contractor.'
Two weeks later his rankings for his bread-and-butter term — 'AC repair' — had slipped from third to seventh.
We ran the diagnosis. His primary category had been silently diluted. Google leans hardest on the primary category, and his extra ones muddied the signal of what he actually was. Worse, 'general contractor' pulled him into a category where he had zero proof and zero reviews.
We stripped him back to one sharp primary — 'HVAC contractor' — and three tightly relevant secondaries. Nothing else.
Within eighteen days 'AC repair' climbed back to second, then to the top spot. His call volume went from 31 to 58 a week.
Fewer categories. Stronger signal.
The lesson: your primary category is a precision instrument — every irrelevant category you bolt on quietly weakens the one ranking you actually want.
