Ch. 15: When 40 Links Beat 400
The guru playbook said 'more links, always.' I ran with it on my hiking-gear site — bought a $1,500 package, ended up with ~400 referring domains, mostly directories and PBN sludge.
Month 10: rankings actually dropped. 12k sessions to 8k. I'd spent $1,500 to make things worse, and I spent three weeks disavowing the junk I'd just bought.
A friend's competing site had maybe 40 referring domains — but four were real outdoor blogs and one was a regional newspaper roundup. He outranked me on every money term. I almost sold the site out of frustration.
I pivoted to digital-PR: one good 'we tested 19 rain jackets in a storm' study earned 11 editorial links over six months. Sessions recovered to 19k, revenue $280/mo.
— Link relevance and editorial intent crush raw count
— A bad link isn't neutral; it can drag you down
Lesson banked: Ten links someone chose to give beat a thousand someone sold you.
