Defending boxes you hold vs chasing new ones — the neglected half of the budget
10:10 UTC — A program lead's confession we keep hearing: every hour goes to winning snippets, zero to defending the ones already won, and the held boxes quietly bleed out.
The tradeoff teams misprice:
— Acquisition: glamorous, reported to clients, but a fresh box is fragile through the next volatility spike.
— Defense: invisible in reports, yet a held box you keep current is far cheaper to retain than a lost one is to reclaim.
The split we keep hearing works — a standing 'held-snippet' list, re-checked monthly, answers refreshed when the box format shifts. Reportedly a stale answer is the easiest box for a rival to steal. Most teams find out only when CTR already cratered. Watching this.
