Single-author voice vs a content team for E-E-A-T

Single-author voice vs a content team for E-E-A-T

Month 1: My health-adjacent site (supplements) ran under one made-up author name. Cheap, simple, consistent. I scaled to 70 posts under "Sarah, our wellness writer" — who didn't exist.

Month 4: a core update in the health space gutted me. 16k → 5k. The update leaned hard on real expertise signals — and my phantom author had no credentials, no LinkedIn, no byline anywhere off-site. Google increasingly wants a real person behind YMYL advice.

The turn: I couldn't fake my way back. I brought on a real registered dietitian, paid her to review and byline the medical claims, built her an author page with actual credentials and an external profile.

Month 9: rankings recovered to 13k — not all the way, but the reviewed pages led the comeback. The cost was real money per article, not $0.

The takeaway: a single fake author scales cheaply until an expertise update asks "who actually said this?" For low-stakes niches, one voice is fine. For anything health/finance/safety, real credentialed authors aren't optional — they're the moat. Faking expertise works right up until it catastrophically doesn't.
