In Google Search Console, don’t wait for the clicks report to move. Check the query and page reports for a quieter pattern: average position slipping on pages that still hold impressions, CTR flattening on branded queries, and one URL losing visibility while the rest of the site looks normal.
Use these early signals:
- average position worsens across a cluster of similar queries
- impressions stay stable or rise, but clicks stop following
- a page falls from page 1 to page 2 for its main terms
- the same query starts showing more URLs than before
That mix usually points to a relevance issue, a technical change, or stronger competition. If the drop is broad, inspect internal links, titles, and cannibalization. If it is isolated, compare the affected page with the top-ranking pages and look for intent mismatch, weaker content depth, or lost authority signals.
The habit is simple: review rankings while traffic still looks safe. By the time clicks fall, the problem has usually been visible for days in Search Console.
