Building a Competitor Anchor Benchmark That Holds Up
Claiming '4% exact-match is safe' is meaningless without a niche-specific reference. Natural distributions vary widely — a SaaS brand and an affiliate review site face different baselines. The method:
— Select three to five domains that genuinely outrank you for your priority queries. Aspirational giants distort the model; their brand-search volume produces branded-anchor ratios no challenger can match.
— Pull each competitor's unique-domain anchor distribution using the same five-bucket scheme you used on yourself. Consistency of method matters more than tool choice.
— Record the range, not the average. If exact-match across rivals spans 2-9%, the safe corridor is a range, and outliers may be ranking despite their profile, not because of it.
The interpretive caution: correlation between a winning profile and rankings does not establish that the profile caused the ranking. Strong content and domain authority can carry an aggressive anchor mix that would sink a weaker site.
Limitation: you see competitors' surviving profiles, not the ones that got penalized and disappeared — a survivorship bias that systematically understates risk.
Open question: should the benchmark weight each competitor by ranking position, treating the top result as the most informative target?
