Diluting an Over-Optimized Exact-Match Profile

Diluting an Over-Optimized Exact-Match Profile

Suppose your audit returns an exact-match ratio that sits well above your niche's observed norm. The instinct is to disavow. Often the better first move is dilution — adding natural-looking anchors until the ratio normalizes, without touching existing links that may be passing value.

A staged playbook:

— Quantify the gap. If exact-match sits at 18% and comparable competitors cluster near 4%, you don't need to remove links; you need roughly four to five times the current volume in branded and naked anchors to mechanically pull the percentage down.
— Prioritize anchors that arise naturally: brand mentions, URL citations, 'according to [brand]'. These rarely trip over-optimization heuristics.
— Sequence acquisition over months, not weeks. A sudden corrective burst can itself read as manipulation.

The logic rests on the assumption that classifiers weigh distribution, not absolute exact-match count. Per analyses following Penguin 4.0's shift to granular, link-level evaluation, this assumption weakened — Google appears able to devalue individual anchors rather than penalizing the whole domain. If true, dilution helps the aggregate signal but not the devalued links themselves.

Limitation: 'comparable competitors' is doing heavy lifting; choose three to five genuine SERP rivals, not aspirational ones.

Open question: does dilution restore lost ranking, or merely prevent further suppression while the original anchors stay neutralized?
