Ahrefs Content Gap is a great cold-start: feed it 3 competitors, get keywords they rank for and you don't. 10 minutes, hundreds of ideas.
But it's blind to the thing that wins — INTENT and FORMAT. It'll hand you 'best crm' but won't tell you the SERP flipped from listicles to comparison tables, or that an AI Overview now eats the top.
My flow:
— Tool: build the raw opportunity list. Filter to KD I can actually win.
— Manual SERP read on the top 10 candidates: what format ranks NOW, what's the gap, is there even traffic left under the AI box.
The tool finds the door. Reading the SERP tells you if it's worth walking through. Do both, in that order.
