Found a 5-hop redirect chain bleeding link equity
Client migrated platforms twice. URLs went http to https to www to new-slug to final. Five hops. Each hop leaks a bit of authority and burns crawl time.
The fix:
— Crawled every URL, logged the full redirect path
— Rewrote every rule to point directly to the final destination in one hop
— Old URL A goes straight to final URL E, skip B, C, D entirely
Google follows long chains but grudgingly, and after ~5 hops it can give up. One-hop redirects pass max equity and crawl clean.
Caveat: keep the old hop rules in place too, just retarget them. Someone has a bookmark to URL C and you still need that to resolve in one jump to E.
