<b>Folder-per-country beats ccTLD for most clients</b>

Client wanted separate .de, .fr, .es domains for three markets. That's three domains to build authority for from zero.

What I steered them to:
— One strong domain, language folders: /de/ /fr/ /es/
— Full <code>hreflang</code> set in each, pointing to every language version including self
— x-default on the language picker

Now every market rides the same domain authority instead of splitting it three ways. One backlink profile lifts everything.

ccTLDs only win when you genuinely need country-level trust signals or local legal presence. For most, folders consolidate strength.

Caveat: hreflang has to be reciprocal. If /de/ points to /fr/ but /fr/ doesn't point back, Google ignores the whole cluster. Validate both directions.
