<b>"Longer videos get pushed harder now."</b>
This came from TikTok publicly courting longer content and creators assuming length itself is rewarded. The incentive memo got misread as a ranking factor.
The mechanism: TikTok rewards <i>total watch time</i>, and a 3-minute video <i>can</i> accumulate more than a 15-second one — but only if completion holds. Most long videos crater retention by minute one, generating less watch time than a tight loop watched twice.
What's true: length is a multiplier on retention, not a free boost. Go long only when you have 3 minutes of genuinely held attention. Otherwise a 12-second loop wins on watch-time-per-impression.
