Sitemap index file vs one flat sitemap: when splitting helps indexing

A single sitemap handles 50,000 URLs / 50MB. Past that you need a sitemap index. But splitting earlier is a tactic, not just a limit.

Splitting by section (e.g. /blog, /products, /tags) into separate sitemaps lets GSC's per-sitemap stats show you which section indexes poorly. One flat file hides that.

Pros (split + index): per-section indexing visibility, isolate the weak area, faster partial recrawls via targeted lastmod.
Cons (split): more files to maintain, slight setup overhead.
Pros (flat): dead simple, one URL to submit.
Cons (flat): no breakdown, can't tell if it's your tags or your products that won't index.

Best for splitting: any site over a few thousand URLs, or when you suspect one section is dragging. NOT worth the overhead under ~500 URLs. 4/5 for split once you scale.
