Stop asking users what they want—start researching the friction they face daily
Direct questions often fail because users rationalize behavior. Instead of asking for feature requests, observe where the current process breaks down. This identifies real pains that people pay to solve, rather than "nice-to-haves" that are eventually ignored.
Focus on these pillars during your discovery phase:
— Trigger: What event made them look for a solution?
— Inertia: What prevents them from switching from their current tool?
— Anxiety: What worries them during the sign-up or onboarding?
— Outcome: What does their "better life" look like after the friction is gone?
Competitor analysis should focus on experience gaps. Look at negative reviews to see where users feel abandoned. These friction points are your biggest opportunities for positioning and market entry.
Effective research uncovers the gap between a user’s reality and their goal. Focus on the obstacles, not the tools. Solve the friction, and conversion follows. 💡
