If you can't find a page in 3 clicks from the homepage, Google treats it as garbage. Here's the hunt.
Orphan-page audits get skipped because they're boring. Do them anyway. The playbook:
— Export your full URL list from the sitemap.
— Crawl the site and export every internally-linked URL.
— Subtract: sitemap minus crawled = orphans. These are pages Google only knows from your sitemap, with zero internal votes.
— For each orphan, find 3 topically-relevant parents and add a contextual link from the body, not the footer.
Most "thin content" penalties are just orphans starved of equity. A page with no internal links isn't thin, it's abandoned.
When did you last reconcile sitemap against crawl? Bet it's been months.
