Subcategories vs tag/attribute pages — which should I let rank?

Subcategories vs tag/attribute pages — which should I let rank?

'Q: My platform auto-creates tag pages. Should those rank, or only my real subcategories?'

Short answer: Make a few high-demand attribute pages into curated, indexable subcategories; noindex the rest of the auto-tag sprawl.

The longer version: The difference is curation, not structure. A 'subcategory' you designed (/mens/running-shoes) has intent, copy, and a clean URL. An auto-tag page (/tag/blue, /tag/lightweight, /tag/2023) is machine-spawned, overlapping, and usually thin — the kind of bloat that drags down crawl efficiency.

Don't blanket-kill tags, though. Some attributes are real searches. 'Waterproof' or 'wide-fit' deserve a promoted, indexable page; 'lightweight' or 'new' don't. Promote the searched attributes into proper subcategories, noindex the long tail of tags.

Example: keep /shoes/waterproof (real demand, curated), noindex /tag/blue, /tag/comfortable, /tag/sale.

Rule of thumb: A page earns the index by matching a query, not by existing automatically.
