Recovery without touching anchors: a counterfactual

Worth pairing with all the anchor-fix successes: a 2023 site that recovered from a core-update drop while changing nothing about its links.

It had lost ~45% of traffic and carried a 36% exact-match ratio — a profile any auditor would flag. The owner, against advice, left the link profile untouched and instead rewrote thin content, consolidated 40 overlapping pages, and improved internal structure.

At the next core update, ~7 months later, traffic recovered to ~90% of prior levels. The 36% exact-match ratio was unchanged throughout.

This is a deliberate counterfactual to the anchor-dilution playbook. If a high exact-match ratio were the binding penalty, recovery without touching it should not have happened — yet it did.

On one hand, a clean recovery with the 'risky' ratio held constant is strong evidence the ratio wasn't the active suppressor here. On the other, content consolidation can change internal anchor distribution and link equity flow even when external anchors are frozen, reintroducing an anchor mechanism by the back door.

Limitation: single case, and core updates re-evaluate everything at once, so attribution to content is itself uncertain.

Open question: how often does a flagged anchor ratio coexist peacefully with good rankings once content quality clears the bar?
