Naked URLs are the most honest line in your anchor distribution
Naked-URL anchors — the raw https:// string as clickable text — get treated as noise to be ignored in ratio math. I'd argue they're the most diagnostically useful category you have.
Reasoning: a naked URL is what a non-marketer pastes. Forum users, journalists citing a source, people sharing in comments — they don't craft anchors, they paste links. So the naked-URL fraction is a rough proxy for how much of your profile came from people who weren't optimizing.
A 2020 distribution study across organically grown sites found naked-URL and brand anchors together forming the bulk of healthy profiles, with keyword anchors as a minority tail. The shape — not any single percentage — is the tell.
On one hand, a profile thin on naked URLs but rich in tidy keyword anchors looks manufactured precisely because real link-paste behavior is missing. On the other, vertical matters: B2B SaaS earns different paste behavior than recipe blogs, so absolute baselines don't transfer.
Limitation: scrapers misclassify naked URLs when the visible text is a shortened or tracked link, inflating or deflating the category unpredictably.
Practical read: before chasing keyword anchors, check whether your profile even contains the messy, lazy, human links a real audience leaves.
Open question: does Google treat naked-URL prevalence as a positive naturalness signal, or merely as anchors that transmit no keyword and are therefore neutral?
