Q: New site, small budget. Should I cover one narrow topic deeply or spread across many?

Q: New site, small budget. Should I cover one narrow topic deeply or spread across many?

Short answer: go narrow first, the data is consistent on this. A new site in the outdoor-gear space had budget for 30 articles. Instead of covering tents, boots, kayaks, and more, they put all 30 into backpacking gear alone.

Result after 4 months: 19 of 30 articles ranked on page 1, versus a sister test site that spread 30 articles across 5 subtopics and got only 6 on page 1, same age and authority.

The measurable gap: 63% page-1 rate (narrow) vs 20% (broad).

In practice: a small site builds topical authority faster by dominating one corner before expanding. Spreading thin means competing everywhere from zero.
